Denver Audubon’s Voices of the Sky honors autumn migration’s beauty and mystery while calling us to our collective duty to protect these wonders.
“Is not this a true autumn day? Just the still melancholy that I love—that makes life and nature harmonize. The birds are consulting about their migrations, the trees are putting on the hectic or the pallid hues of decay and begin to strew the ground… Delicious autumn! My very soul is wedded to it, and if I were a bird, I would fly about the earth seeking the successive autumns.”
—George Eliot, Letter to Miss Lewis, Oct. 1, 1841
Author George Eliot — really Mary Ann Evers, an adventurous woman who wrote under a male pseudonym so her words could find their place in the world — captured something timeless about this season: the harmony of endings that are also beginnings, the quiet beauty of leaves falling, and the restless conversations of birds gathering for their great journeys. Autumn is, indeed, delicious — a season of both melancholy and movement, where life prepares itself for what lies ahead.
Here in Colorado, the migration she so vividly imagined unfolds before our eyes. The mountains serve as a vast corridor, concentrating thousands of birds along their ridges and valleys. Warblers, thrushes, and sparrows slip south by night under a blanket of stars, while raptors ride thermals and ridgelines by day. Even the tiniest travelers — hummingbirds who weigh less than a coin — trust their wings to carry them across continents.
And just as Eliot longed to “fly about the earth seeking the successive autumns,” we, too, are called to seek and protect these fleeting wonders. At Denver Audubon, that means inspiring people to see migration not only as beauty in motion, but as a reminder of our responsibility: to safeguard dark skies, to preserve resting places along rivers and ridges, and to ensure that the next generation can also marvel at these miraculous passages.
In this issue, we explore migration through many lenses: the influence of the moon and eclipses, the energy efficiency birds model for us, the rare wanderers gracing Colorado skies this fall, and the journeys of our partners who — like birds themselves — are creating new pathways. We’re especially excited to highlight Her Wild Life, a new company expanding equity in travel by offering more women-led adventures.
As the footsteps of leaves soften the ground and the skies grow restless with wings, may we find in this “true autumn day” both the poetry and the purpose of our work together.
