Denver Audubon focuses its more than 50-year-old mission with a call for us all to, "Be a Voice of the Sky" that celebrates and advocates for nature.
Nature has always had a lot to say. And among its most eloquent ambassadors are birds—creatures whose voices have shaped the soundtrack of our lives since before we had words to name them.
Each morning, the dawn chorus rises with the sun, stitching together a tapestry of sound for a waking world. Somewhere over the mountains, a Sandhill Crane trumpets; across the globe, a Shoebill Stork clatters; in a garden nearby, a Hummingbird makes a fierce, shimmering sound. These voices carry joy and wonder—but their absence speaks just as loudly. A quiet meadow or an empty sky is nature’s most urgent warning.
It is in these silences that we hear the truth: species are in decline, habitats are disappearing, climates are shifting, and the balance of life is under strain. For more than half a century, Denver Audubon has listened closely—not only to the beauty of birdsong, but to the silence where song should be—and pursued one clear mission: inspiring actions that protect birds, other wildlife, and their habitats through education, conservation, and research. It’s our promise to keep nature’s voice strong—and to help our community answer with both help and hope.
But this conversation is not ours alone. It belongs to everyone who has paused to hear the trill of a Western Meadowlark, watched a Red-tailed Hawk circle the sky, or smiled at the chatter of Black-capped Chickadees outside the window. Members, volunteers, families, teachers, and neighbors across the Denver metro are all part of this dialogue. And we know we can do more to help those voices be heard.
That’s why you’ll soon see our name tied to a new rallying call: Be a Voice of the Sky. This isn’t a slogan—it’s a shared responsibility. It means creating more opportunities to connect with nature, more ways to take action, and more trusted, science-based information you can rely on.
Through this publication—and the larger movement it represents—we invite you to join a growing community that acts boldly, cares deeply, and speaks clearly for the wild world. Each issue will share stories that spark curiosity, celebrate beauty, and remind us of this powerful truth: we make a difference.
Yes, nature has a lot to say. But today, it takes all of our voices—clear, joyful, and resolute—to make sure the world hears it.
